Education: Agotime SHS marks National Mathematics Day in style- READ!

Agotime Senior High School, one of the senior high schools located in the Agotime Ziope District of the Volta Region of Ghana has marked the National Mathematics Day in grand style. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Mathematics for a better world”.

The programme received an overwhelming patronage which brought teachers and students together to make a case for the pivotal roles Mathematics plays in our daily lives. Activities on the day included, hands-on /practical activities in Mathematics, debate and quiz. 

The activity-filled and fun -packed day began with a debate on the topic, “Mathematics is a necessity for nation building” lived up to its billing as students engaged each other in an academic exercise. It was indeed such a sight to behold. 

Students were also mandated to perform hands-on / practical activities in Mathematics by assembling some shapes using Manila Cards and later, presented to their colleagues. 

The day ended with another enthralling and exciting battle for supremacy involving the four houses namely: House One, House Two, House Three and House Four in the quiz competition. 

The chairperson for the occasion, Mr. Francis Akpitse who doubles as the Assistant Headmaster- Academic, spoke briefly on the importance of Mathematics. According to him, there has to be the awakening to see the subject as a focal point in nation building. He also admonished the students to make the conscious effort to develop the love for it. This, he said, was the only way to erase the misconceptions about the subject. 

Mr. Dodzi Darlington Martin Nutor, the Science and Mathematics Coordinator at the District Education Office, Agotime Ziope who was in attendance also drummed home the need to appreciate the work of Mathematics in the lives of humanity and hoped that the attitude towards it would change going forward. 

At the end of the programme, awards were presented to deserving students as a token of appreciation for their efforts

The Scienee Education Unit (National STEM centre) of the Ghana Education Service in collaboration with the Ghana Mathematics Society has set aside 14th February of every year to be observed as National Mathematics Day. The main aim of celebrating the day was to increase the awareness among people about the importance of Mathematics for the development of humanity. 

The 2021 National Mathematics Day Celebration was moved to Wednesday, 17th February, 2021 because 14th February was Sunday.
