The Assemblyman for the Amutinu/Salakope Electoral Area, is unhappy with the government for the unfortunate neglect of his people over the years.
In a press release sighted by the rymcitigh.com, the Assemblyman for the Amutinu/Salakope Electoral Area, Hon. Sylvester Kumawu, has called out the government for paying lips service to the plights of the victims after tidal waves have consistently caused havoc. In his words, the responses to the crisis for all these years have been nothing but a charade.
“The consistent inaction over the years reveals a blatant disregard for the people of the Volta Region by President Nana Addo, Dr. Bawumia, and key stakeholders. They have deliberately neglected the tidal wave-affected communities for eight years”.
He also took on the government for always failing to empathize with the people of the area whenever the perennial problem raises its ugly head. He was quick to add that numerous promises made by key appointees of the government have also not been fulfilled. Topical amongst them was government’s failure to provide funding for the construction of the sea defence walls. According to him, since March 2022 that the promise was made, nothing has been heard regarding the continuation of the project.
“Adding insult to injury, Hon. Asenso Boakye, the then Minister of Works and Housing, and the current Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, assured the people at a durbar in Salakope in March 2022 that work on the stalled sea defense project would resume in June of the same year”.
“While these empty promises were made, the Finance Minister, surprisingly, did not include the sea defense project in the 2022 budget. This sparked heated debates between the minority and majority in Parliament”- the statement further revealed.
He seized the opportunity to express gratitude to some benevolent individuals and organizations for coming to their aid whenever the need arises.
“It’s crucial to remember the loss of life and property worth millions during that time. We are grateful to John Mahama, NADMO, caring sisters, and philanthropists for their invaluable donations to the victims”.
Hon. Sylvester Kumawu further disclosed that the ramifications of the disaster have been dire on the entire community as the victims cannot recover from the ruins as thousands were displaced and properties submerged; including farm animals, buildings, fishing boats, nets and outboard motors.
In a related development, few days ago, another wave has struck again leaving about fifteen (15) households in Salakope, Amutinu and adjoining communities in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region currently displaced and seeking shelter in churches after their homes were devastated by tidal waves.
