Dear Volta Regional Minster,
During the two-day working visit of President John Dramani Mahama, you granted an interview to the media and highlighted key interventions being made by the NDC government. Amongst them was the mention of providing adequate infrastructure to all SHS/SHTS schools in the region. To paraphrase your statement, you said in all the sixty- eight(68) SHS/SHTS schools in the region, there is no single one that has not benefited from a GETFUND project that the government is currently undertaking.
Honourable Regional Minister, I find this declaration not a true reflection of the situation. I say this bearing in mind the fact as established on the ground in one of the senior high schools- AGOSEC, located within the Agotime-Ziope District. It is one of the only two second cycle schools in the district.
In the run-up to the 2024 General Elections, the incumbent MP for Agotime-Ziope Constituency met both staff and students of Agotime Senior High School (AGOSEC). He was in the company of some constituency executives. Amongst the numerous promises made was the lobbying for the construction of a new Administration Block when the NDC flagbearer makes a return to the presidency. In fact, he was very categorical. He assured the gathering that the government of President John Dramani Mahama would not neglect the school’s infrastructural needs. His assurances were received with a lot of razzmatazz.
Today, nothing has been heard in terms of award of contracts(s), thereby mandating the contractor(s) to be on site. We are just looking into the air and counting on the grace to locate us. When exactly? We do not even know. The facility is however further deteriorating and could soon collapse. An assessment done by the Ghana National Fire Service revealed that the structure has become a death trap. The signs are visible on the walls and atop the building.
The Headmaster’s work is limited as there is so little he could do. It is not his job to chase projects. Notwithstanding, he has been running around trying to find answers. The school’s Board of Governors have made follow-ups all to no avail. What is next? We have zilch idea.
I do not even want to talk about the poor state of classroom blocks, furniture challenges, transport issues or inadequate staff bungalows. What about toilet facilities? Sir, we need help.
Clearly, the government has been working intentionally to boost infrastructure in order to elevate second cycle schools but the truth is, it looks like some schools are being left out. AGOSEC is one of them.
Sir, the facts are in sharp contrast to the prevailing narrative. Nothing is happening on the ground. We feel crest-fallen, dejected, isolated and powerless.
It is my fervent prayer that this LOVE LETTER finds you well. This is just a gentle reminder that not all schools have been attended to by GETFUND.
Thank you for your time, Sir. I really look forward to seeing the statements made on the ground. I do not doubt your footprints at all. You have been superb since assuming office. AGOSEC is not far away from the regional capital and locating us is not even difficult. It should never be said that under an NDC government where projects are shared, the school is left out.
Agotime Senior High School is a great institution where academic excellence is always top on the agenda. With adequate infrastructure and excellent resources, the school could contribute its quota towards the phasing out of the Transitional School System. This, I say, with all pride and topmost sincerity.
We know it is never too late to come to our aid. We deserve every ounce of support from GETFUND too. We await your intervention, Sir.
