Mathematics as a subject the world over has been a mountain that most students struggle to climb. Since time immemorial, the attitude towards the subject across all the levels in Ghana is nothing to write home about. Today, we shine light on a genius who is working so hard to demystify the misconceptions about Mathematics. This promises to be a revealing insight.
Delalinam Besa Amegago hails from Dornorgbor, located in the Anloga District of the Volta Region, Ghana. The former student of Keta Senior High Technical School and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has undoubtedly been an ardent lover of the subject right from his early days at school.
It was this passion that motivated him to pursue General Science in senior high school, a decision he never regretted. The MPhil holder in Statistics and now, an NSMQ trainer at the prestigious Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon, revealed to rymcitigh.com that his ultimate desire has always been to make students understand mathematical concepts correctly hence, his strong interest in the NSMQ and other competitive exams over the years.
Having learned the ropes and being an enthusiast himself, he felt a clear calling to produce comprehensive guides for contestants of the popular quiz competition and to help students master the basics of Mathematics. His contribution to advancing the cause is titled: “Thinking Mathematics”, a project he revealed took seventeen months to complete. It is now five years old since it was launched.
The 852-paged book explains Mathematics concepts, formulae and examples. It also highlights the profiles and the work of some prominent mathematicians. Delalinam a.k.a. Rootical, revealed that this work is first of its kind and has been reviewed by all those who matter, including two PhD holders and past NSMQ contestants.
The book “Thinking Mathematics”, is widely accepted and used by most of the country’s teams. He therefore encourages all student, whether on the NSMQ team or no, to get a copy, as it is useful for everyone. Over the years, it has proven to be an indispensable resource.
So far, he has three books to his credit, namely: The Real Number System (July, 2019), A Treatise on Quadratics ( May, 2021) and Thinking Mathematics (August, 2021). He trusts that the contribution to the stock of knowledge available to the students would be properly utilized.
When asked about how his NSMQ training niche began, he disclosed that it started in 2017 and since then, he has never looked back. In the 2018 and 2019 seasons, he was part of the team in Keta Senior High Technical School that made it to the semi finals on both occasions. He is well-traveled as far as the nurturing and preparation of NSMQ teams across the country are concerned. Prior to joining PRESEC, he had stints with Achimota School, Anlo Senior High School, Bishop Herman College, OLA Senior High, Ho, Adisadel College, Aburi Girls, Saviour Senior High School, Zion College, Anloga, Mawuli School, Sonrise Christian High, Accra Academy, Wallahs Academy and a host of other schools.
In 2025, he was honoured to join PRESEC, as a member of both teaching staff and the NSMQ team. He disclosed that winning the title with the PRESEC team, the ninth on the log, is a testament to the hard work and determination he has put in over the years. According to him, even though it is a big win for the team, he counts it all joy to be an integral member.
Delalinam hopes to leave a legacy where the trophy and the title are defended in subsequent outings. It is worth-noting that in all their Problem of the Day questions, Mathematics was one thing that set their team apart from the other competing schools.

He also told our news team that it had been his long-standing dream to kiss the NSMQ trophy, a dream that became a reality on September 10, 2026, just a day after his birthday.
He advised the students across the length and breadth of the country to develop love for Mathematics because it is life-engaging and a necessity. He also took the opportunity to pay glowing tribute to the teachers who influenced his journey along the way.

Additionally, I appreciate the support of Mr. Richard Nani who first invited me to join the NSMQ team at KETASCO”- he disclosed.
