Tragedy struck at the Dzodze–Penyi road construction site after a grader allegedly ran over and killed a female worker at the project site.
According to reports, the deceased, Miss Mariama Gbemu, 31, a worker of the construction company, met her untimely death when a grader operating at the Dzodze–Penyi project site reportedly ran into her and two of her colleagues.
Preliminary reports from the Dzodze District Police Command indicate that following their usual morning briefing by management, the workers dispersed to their various duty posts.
The reports indicate that the driver of the grader, upon seeing the workers, stopped to pick up a colleague. Unfortunately, the grader subsequently ran over the deceased and her two colleagues who sustained severe injuries and were rushed to St. Anthony Catholic Hospital for treatment.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the morgue pending autopsy.
The suspect whose name has been withheld, was arrested and subsequently released on bail as investigations continue. The grader has also been impounded pending inspection and testing by officials of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
The late Mariama leaves behind two children.
Members of the public, particularly pedestrians and motorists using the Dzodze–Penyi corridor, are advised to exercise extreme caution when passing through construction zones. Construction sites are not public thoroughfares, and unauthorised access can significantly increase the risk of accidents.
A detailed report on the incident is expected to be released upon the conclusion of the police investigation. In the meantime, the Assembly urges all stakeholders to cooperate fully with investigators to ensure a swift and transparent process.
