AGOTIME TRADITIONAL AREA MARKED 2024 KENTE FESTIVAL IN GRAND STYLE.

Reading Time: 4 minutes

After what looked like a five year-break and absence from the festival scene, the good people of Agotime Traditional Area marked the Kente Festival 2024 in colourful fashion.

The celebration which brought together indigenes and well-wishers from far and near, showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Agotimes. One thing that really stood out during the celebration was the use of different types of woven kente to tell their true identity as a group. It was a beautiful sight to behold as both the young and the old ensured that they are not left out of promoting their tradition.

The one-week programme which began on Sunday, 4th August, 2024, ended on Sunday, 11th August, 2024. Topical during the celebration were re-enacting the story of Godigbe at Afegame, the kente weaving competition, the remembrance of heroes and heroines by firing musketry at Wodome, Asialetorme (Maidens Water Fetching), Miss Kente beauty pageant and the grand durbar.

The number of people who throng the Kpetoe CEPS Academy to take part in the grand durbar was huge. Chiefs, queen mothers and other traditional rulers adorned in full regalia demonstrated the need to be united as an enclave. The latest kente woven during the competition were auctioned and given special names. Economic activities also saw a sharp rise as sellers cashed in on their wares. The hospitality industry benefited greatly too.

An indigene who spoke to our news team was ecstatic that the festival has bounced back after a five-year break. According to him, the division orchestrated by the lingering chieftaincy disputes have stalled development in the area. He was grateful that all is in the past now.

“This year is special to us. The absence of the festival for the past five years has really affected our development because there was no unity. Now, we can all see what is coming. We have a new Konor and that would automatically lead to a trust in our leadership. The youth did well by bringing everyone onboard. Agotime shall and will be great again”.

In his welcome address during the grand durbar, the Konor of the Agotime Traditional Area, Nene Nuer Keteku IV, called on all and sundry to guard against divisive tendencies that do not promote development. He revealed that it is only through the unity of purpose that the youth can attain their full potentials.

“It is the belief of our children that only through unity can they climb the shoulders of giants to see farther. I believe Agotime can attain its full potential by overcoming divisiveness. I believe brighter days lie ahead. In the same vein, I sagely advise politicians to discard the cloak of distrust and embrace the mantle of unity”.

He further charged the citizens of Agotime to take active part in community socioeconomic development which has been missing for some years now. According to him, serving one’s community is the greatest honour bestowed upon an individual which leads to impact on future generations. The Konor further seized the opportunity to appeal to the government to complete the Kente Village project which has stalled for years. The town’s chronic water problem also came to the fore. He prayed for quick solutions to the problems.

“Serving one’s community is the greatest honour bestowed upon an individual. Undoubtedly, it is through community service that we can leave a lasting impact on future generations. Regrettably, the passion and vigour for community work have been replaced by armchair criticism and apathy. However, I believe a shift in perspective is essential if we are to achieve the necessary social change. To this end, I implore all citizens of Agotime to become active participants in our community’s socioeconomic development. This is the only path to an enduring legacy”.

There were solidarity messages and speeches from other invited guests as well.
